Gillette, New Jersey — October 21, 2017 Last night, Hans J. Tielmann of Pine Valley Tree Service and only 26 others were honored at a dinner recognizing their efforts and excellence demonstrated in becoming Licensed Tree Experts by the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts.

A Licensed Tree Expert (LTE) is a person who has been examined and proven to be competent in the science and art of diagnosing, treating and preventing tree injuries. Licensed Tree Experts must pass rigorous written and infield tests, provide letters of recommendation and meet a required amount of work experience. Over their licensing period Licensed Tree Experts must also obtain continuing educational credits prior to the re-issuances of their license, ensuring they are up-to-date on new information, skills and techniques in the tree care profession and safety.

Why get certified? It’s the law! As of April 17, 2017 new rules were adopted and put into effect in New Jersey regarding licensing and professional practices within the tree care industry. A business providing tree care services in New Jersey must to be registered and approved by the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts. Each business location hiring itself out to perform tree care services requires at least one licensed person. Presently, with limited Licensed Tree Experts or Licensed Tree Care Operators in the state of New Jersey, it is easy for businesses to fraudulently claim to be accredited tree care companies or tree experts. Even websites like Home Advisor and Angie’s List have recognized the new law and are no longer allowing unlicensed tree companies to be listed on their sites.

When looking for a tree care company, it’s important to remember that these changes impact you. The new standards were set with the public interest in mind after witnessing or receiving complaints of companies who are either unqualified, not carrying the correct insurance or performing substandard work. This was especially true after storm events when many reputable tree care companies were overwhelmed with emergency calls. This created a negative view of the industry as a whole even though the majority of tree care companies abide by the law and industry standards. The new licensing provision aims to create a better-trained and more knowledgeable work force, while continuing education will keep current tree experts aware of new techniques, equipment and research findings. In turn, more knowledgeable service providers will improve tree health and longevity and decrease the creation of hazardous trees, reduce the number of fatalities and injuries in the tree care profession, and promote proper industry tree care practices. As a small, local family business, Pine Valley Tree Service has always promoted proper tree care and safety. Now, by supporting and certifying yet another member of their crew, Pine Valley is upholding the law while raising the standard of your local tree care providers and professionals.
